This annual award was envisioned to be comparable to the Pulitzer Prizes in the field of journalism, and was funded through an endowment which financed the award. The award criteria stipulated that those nominated to receive the award have superlative achievement in the preservation and interpretation of sites, buildings, objects, and antiquities significant in American history and culture. Nomination notices were published in the "Preservation News." These records also contain information on persons nominated, monetary contributions, and responses to inquiries regarding the award.
